Thailand's Official Flood Warning Systems, Explained

Our score answers one question, once: how risky is this location overall, before you buy or rent, based on elevation, flood history, and distance to water. Once you're actually living somewhere, a different question comes up day to day during the rainy season — what's happening right now. That's what the official platforms below are for, not us.

GISTDA — the same agency behind the flood-history data used in our score — also runs a public disaster monitoring platform showing satellite-detected flood extents during an active event. Useful once the rainy season is underway, with the same limits already documented on our Methodology page: brief or very localized flooding can go undetected from space.

Thai Water, run by Thailand's Hydro-Informatics Institute, tracks real-time water levels across the country's major rivers, canals, and dams — useful for seeing whether upstream dam releases or a rising river are approaching flood stage, particularly relevant for areas along the Chao Phraya.

TMD publishes official rainfall forecasts and severe weather warnings — the direct-cause side of flood risk, complementing GISTDA's after-the-fact detection with a heads-up before heavy rain arrives rather than after.

These official platforms are national in scope and can lag or miss hyperlocal conditions — a building's own drainage, ground-floor design, or a neighbor's or security guard's memory of past events often tells you more day to day than any dashboard. Use both.
