Bangkok vs Phuket vs Pattaya: Comparing Flood Risk by City

Before that, it's worth understanding that Bangkok, Phuket, and Pattaya don't flood for the same underlying reason — the factors that make one Bangkok district safer than another don't map cleanly onto why Phuket floods.

Bangkok sits on the Chao Phraya delta at roughly 1.5m average elevation, with flooding driven mainly by river/canal overflow and heavy monsoon rain overwhelming a flat drainage system — the 2011 floods are the clearest example. Risk varies a lot by district (outer, low-lying areas historically far more exposed than the elevated central core), which is exactly what our Bangkok district guide and location pages break down.

Phuket is an island with real elevation variation between its hills and coastal flats, unlike Bangkok's uniform flatness — but steep terrain funnels heavy rain into low-lying areas fast, causing flash flooding rather than the slow, sustained river flooding typical of Bangkok. This pattern matters for how you read a report here: brief, localized flash floods don't always leave a signature large enough to be detected by satellite, so a zero on flood history is less conclusive on Phuket's hillside roads than it is for a sustained river flood elsewhere (see our Methodology page for this limitation in detail).

Pattaya sits on a coastal plain, flatter than Phuket but without Bangkok's river-delta drainage burden — its flood risk leans more on local drainage capacity and heavy rain pooling than on a major river system, closer in mechanism to many of Thailand's other beach towns than to either Bangkok or Phuket.

None of this ranks one city as categorically "safer" than another — each has both low-risk and high-risk pockets. Use these differences to know what to ask about in each city (drainage in Pattaya, flash-flood history in Phuket hillside roads, elevation in outer Bangkok), then check the specific address you're considering rather than relying on the city's reputation alone.
